It should, but it does somewhat depend on the type, some do seem to do better with tank mates. Most any cichllid will be fine housed alone though.

Sure, it should do fine. Cichlids arent a schooling or schoaling fish, so they don't really care about being alone. But be aware, if it matures in a tank by itself, it will probably never allow you to add another fish to your tank w/out killing the new addition. (unless it's a peaceful cichlid, like a ram, severum, kribensis, or other peaceful South American cichlid)
