I found 319 questions just like this one. " Why do people say evolution is only a theory, gravity is only a theory too." It only takes a few seconds to look up Newton and the Law of Gravity on the internet but it takes even less time to jump off your roof and find out that you will land on the ground every time. Imagine that! You could discover gravity just like Newton did over 300 years ago. Amazing!

I am not going to get into an argument of the definition of a theory. If you think gravity is still a theory then provide a link. I posted this question of what other "theories" are out there that explain better as to why objects fall. It's really pretty simple. Now all you have to do is just type.

Re: MSI Cord

In science, there are a specific number of established scientific laws, or physical laws as they are sometimes called, that are considered ABSOLUTE and inarguable facts of the physical world. Laws of science may, however, be disproved if new facts or evidence arise to contradict them.

You have not provided any evidence that contradicts the Law of Gravity. There is a flaw in the "theory" of gravity. It doesn't explain how Jesus ascended into heaven or how angels can just fly. I am a christian and a scientist and I believe in both an "intelligent designer" and I believe in science. However I believe that you cannot mix science with religion. The bible teaches up how to use our hearts not our minds. If I may I would like to add to the theory of "intelligent falling". The soul has a mass. It weighs 23 grams and is made of helium. So when you die your soul leaves your body and floats up toward the heavens.

Probably because so many people who deny evolution are also ignorant of scientific terms and don't really know what a theory really is. To most non-scientists a theory is just a guess or even worse, something that scientists want to be true even though there are no supporting facts. Some who have a smattering of knowledge in these things confuse a theory with an hypothesis and think the terms are interchangeable. Few realize that a theory has survived the test of time and has yet to be proven incorrect. A theory is one step away from a law.

That is because the "Law" which defines gravity, which Newton derived and discovered is in fact nothing more than scientific theory. Evolution is also scientific theory. The major problem we have is that people do not understand what is meant be a theory. A theory is a very detailed explanation of a phenomena which is based on observed evidence and/or experimental data, makes some predictions which can be observed and/or tested, and is not an absolute truth. In the case of gravity, we know that massive object experience an attractive force between each other. This can be very easily verified (drop you pen and it will fall to the ground). The theory of gravity explains to the best of our knowledge what we think gravity is and how it works, it is NOT absolute truth. Science cannot provide absolute truths, it can provide only explanations that are to the best of our knowledge and within the limit of our own ability to test and see our world. Any "theory", like intelligent design, which can be modified around is absolute truth (in the case of intelligent design, the presence of a designer), is NOT theory.

For some people, faith is so much more important then provable fact that they make it a point to discredit anything scientific, no matter how blatantly obvious the fact it. Gravity is obviously a fact, as you say. And it only takes a few generations of moths to prove that evolution is a fact.

When a population of moths lives in a forest of trees with dark bark, there tends to be a higher number of dark colored moths. This is simply because the dark ones can blend in and don’t get picked off by the predators. But when pollution or something else comes along and changes the forest to have light colored bark, the few moths that are lucky enough to have inherited a mutation to become light rather then dark in color are the ones to live, while the dark ones show up against the bark and are eaten. Over an amazingly short amount of time, the population of moths adapts to nearly all have the new mutation, in order to survive, and thus the population has evolved. Evolved simply means to change over time in the interest of survival.

Anyway, that’s a very simple example of evolution and still people believe you have to believe in either religion or science. I believe they can coexist quite nicely, myself.

Interesting question, I hadn’t realized people don’t believe in gravity. It’s a good thing science isn’t affected by stupidity.

Obviously, you don't understand what 'theory' means in the scientific sense. Theories CONTAIN facts and laws and observations, they don't get elevated to such. There will always be a theory of gravity, which contains everything from the gravitation constant close the Earth's surface, to orbital mechanics, to dark matter, to general relativity. Just because something is called 'the law of' doesn't mean it's not still part of a larger theory.

Tammi is right. You need to brush up on your techniques. You should do two experiments. First you should try dropping apples form a known height to the ground. Use a stopwatch to time how long it takes. If there are still disbelievers in the Law of Gravity have them lie down on the ground. Now drop watermelons on their heads. Use a stopwatch to see if it takes the same amount of time to land. If they have are still unconvinced tell them to try to stop the fruit from hitting them by using the "Force" like in Star Wars. If this still doesn't convince them then just start chucking whatever fruit you have left at them.

1) Obvious questions on yahoo are perhaps asked by cults to de-stimulate your reactivity in answering. (Satiation technique)

2) As for gravity, it really is a perplexing problem because while we can sense gravity waves, there are no particles, and the waves can permeate any and all matter..nobody thinks it's a theory, but how it works is really a mystery.
