My friends are encouraging me to throw her a birthday party. Of course, it sounds great, but I don't want to go overboard. My friends don't have any kids, but between friends and family we are still at least looking at 30 people.

The first birthday party for your daughter is a great idea. Instead of catering to your ideal party, remember that it's for your daughter. If you invite over 30 people that she doesn't know, this could definitely overwhelm her. A party at home might be better than at a rented place, because she'll be familiar with her surroundings, and not overwhelmed with new things. Just because the party may be at home, doesn't mean it can't be enjoyable and memorable.

Try buying party favors for the guests like cute little stuffed animals. If she has a favorite TV character, such as Barney, you might even look into dressing up like the character. Don't be too vicious though, because this can definitely scare her.

There should be comfort food, and nothing over the top such as steak and lobster. Get a cake for her and make sure she blows out the candle with excitement, which may be the highlight of the party. Don't forget to take videos and/or pictures to keep this day memorable. Lastly, you may even consider making a scrapbook that she will have for the rest of her life.

Good luck on the party planning, and I hope it goes well! Happy birthday to your daughter!

I certainly wouldn't invite that many people to a first birthday party. Only immediate family, grandparents, aunts and uncles if you're close. But not 30 people. especially without children. And don't make a major thing of it. The baby doesn't know what the hell is going on and more often than not they get cranky from all of the attention. Just a small family gathering is sufficent. Save the major parties for when the child is older and can appreciate them.

oh that sucks lol no children at a first birthday! well you could always have a bbq at home if it will be all adults, thats not so expensive and relatively easy. there were about 23 under two's at my son's first birthday and it was horrible! and it doesn't look like it's going to get any better this year lol. if your house is too small for the bbq at home, what about having a big picnic at a park? you can take along a few games (balls etc) and your daughter can play and run around with everyone and the adults will probably have fun too.

How about a Baby Einstein/learning party. Friends can bring learning gifts such as Baby Einstein gifts, Fisher Price, Playskool or if they can't afford or find a learning toy gift cards can be used.
Or a Baby Essentials Party where diapers, baby wipes, clothing, baby blankets, stuffed animals, pacifers and toys can be given. A baby essentials party will help you to get what you need and not what you don't need such as a dress too small that maybe Uncle Fred who lives way out west might by accidently buy her or a toy that Aunt Susie had already given her.

Definetly make sure you have a camera to take pictures :-) having a party indoors with lots of toys for her to play with would be good. also if its warm you could even have like a pool party at a hotel for her they have special inter tubes for babys and babys love water. put the cake infront of her so she can put her hands in it i know it sounds weird but it makes babys smile. balloons are nice they will facinate her. if you have anymore questions on this feel free to email me at kitty45342@yahoo.com also if you have questions for other partys too i have great ideas
