It makes your car go faster, just like the NOS stickers on your windshield.

In actuality those noisy exhausts typically have a lot less backpressure than OEM exhausts. Less backpressure means the flow exiting your engine is less restrictive meaning more high end power (horsepower) although there is a slight reduction in low RPM torque do to some aerodynamic principles of the exiting exhaust. (basically the same princilple that governs water flowing faster from a graden hose when you cover the end of the hose, bernoulli's principle)

The way most people make that lovely noise if they are changing the entire exhaust is to put on a muffler that basically does not muffle the sound and larger diameter exhaust piping. Exhaust tips do absolutely nothing, not even to change its sound unless they are what is known as "Whistler tips"

Another non legal method to making a louder car is to eliminate the catalytic converter from the exhaust or use a pipe to bore out the existing one. Once again both illegal and stupid since the car will no longer pass emissions tests and catalytic converters are expensive.

Noisy Pipes Save Lives. This is an old Biker saying.

That is the truth as any Biker knows. We are not seen, it seems, because we are run off the road and hit so often.

So, we must be HEARD. It really DOES save lives.

You can purchase special pipes for the volume and "quality" of the sound... this is a personal choice. I like the low, throaty sound. You have to be careful because many of these are illegal in various States. If you run, for instance, Cherry Bombs, do NOT grab a handfull of throttle in front of a policeman.

You can, if you are poor, drill holes in your muffler (the "plate" at the end). If you do that, be careful because if you go too far you can have a backfire problem.

Rice Burner is any motorcycle manufactured in Japan, versus Harley Davidsons. Rice Burner (or Rice Grinder) is Biker slang.

Riding Rice is a bad thing amongst the Harley crowd, to varying degrees. Depends upon the Rice rider and the Rice burner. Crotch rockets are usually Rice and are generally highly frowned upon. If you ride the more "chopperish" Rice, like I did (and plan to again shortly), it is not that bad.

You can modify your pipes on Rice burners or Harleys. I rode Rice, by the way (Suzuki Intruder) and loved it. I rode with the Harley crowd and took a little ribbing but not much. I also modified my pipes... reference "Loud Pipes Save Lives".

Exhaust systems have great potential for performance upgrades, and there is a big difference between the $30 tips you buy at wal-mart or on ebay and the $400 full exhaust by reputable companies.

Depending on your motor and intake, moving to a 2.5" to 3" cat-back exhaust will give you more horsepower and lessen back pressure. They tend to give the car a lower sound but many arent as loud like fart cans.

The $30 muffler tips are for kids who think there ride is the sh*t and that they are uber car tunerz.. lolz

The first thing that came to my mind was the heat sheild to the cat converter. Anyway, that resonance you hear could be that. Because it's directly beneath the passenger compartment. Given the high mileage, the bolts may be eaten away by rust. But, any of the things you poined out could also be the problem. Neons are known for tranny problems. But it's the auto tranny's that is mentioned the most. Since yours is a manual, the throw out bearing? Input shaft on the tranny? Sounds like you either need to trade that thing off or have a visit to the garage. Sorry I couldn't be of much help.

There are 2 different sounds of exhaust that are loud....

1. loud noise

2. loud but with a nice tone

The loud annoying is just someone being immature and annoying, my friend runs straight pipes on his 2001 mustang... super loud and sounds like garbage.... the worst exhaust I have ever heard.
I run a high flow cat and a Flowmaster 40 on my Durango... most everyone who hears it says it sounds nice. Thats the difference. The Flowmaster sound is like nothing else anywhere.

Guys with low self-esteem get off on it. So, having a noisy exhaust is good for their weak egos. Most of'em have only small tips.

For bike riders, I would think they put louder exhausts on their bikes so that idiot drivers know that they are there.

For car drivers, it just seems to be the thing to do along with body kits and stupidly loud sound systems.
