It could be mold that has been building up in the ducts, talk to the landlord about possible mold growth. If its more than the normal amount, which Im guessing it is, then the base of the problem needs to be found and then removal of the heavier concentrated areas. If nothing is gonna be done then you need to move out because your health will be at risk.

Hi,
This is important. If you think it the vent causing the problem then you must get it looked at.

If it is an A/C vent and the A/C is on the roof. The A/C unit can grow a bacteria that can cause Legionnaires' disease.

Or the intake vent is near some type of motor/machine that is spiting out oil or soot.

Are you able to go up to the roof your self to check it out and have a good look around.

Get it looked at as soon as possible it doesn't sound healthy at all.

Please have your landlord contact someone to check that your chimney is drafting properly. What you may be seeing is the results of a cracked chimney liner or blocked chimney.

You state you are not feeling well. Headaches and flu like malaise may be an indication of low level Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

The other posters have brought up some other viable potential concerns but because this is the middle of the heating season and CO can Kill.....
You DO have a CO detector in your home, right?

cracked heat exchanger most likely. and or you have a terrible service guy coming to maintain your system 55 years old = inefficiency. don't fix one thing to see the next one fail; change it out to gas if possible you can get 90+ efficiency that means you'll be getting .90 to .94 cents out of every dollar going towards actual usable heat and throwing away only .06 to .10 cents your running at about .50 to .60 on yours the savings from changing it can be re-cooped with in 5 years max
