I graduated at 17, was in college at 18, which I paid for myself, independent from my parents. After college, was lucky to get a good paying job in my field of study, paid off all my student loans. It was very important to me to take responsibility for myself at a younger age, and have never regretted it.

I wasn't independent at all. I actually didn't graduate high school until I was 19 . I'm 23 now, and I'm just starting to get some independence from my family. I lived away from home for a while; paid bills and fended for myself. However, I ran out of money and had to move back home. I'm a full time grad student, so my financial situation limits me to living at home. I can't afford rent. I do take care of all of my personal expenses, including transportation, clothing, etc.
There is nothing wrong with being somewhat dependent on your parents at 18. I'm 23, and I still live at home. I'm not ashamed at all. I'm getting an education which is what is most important for myself and my parents right now. Everyone's life path takes them down different roads. I think someone needs to start worrying if they are 25, and are still dependent on their family.

I'm 19 and I still feel that I'm too dependent on my family: I live here. However, the role of parents by the time that you're 18 is a lot more limited. Go to them for advice if you need them: but don't let them pay for your gas or anything like that. Get a job, think about the future.

Not very...I was a senior in high school when I turned 18, graduated and got a job (still living at home) then was engaged by the end of the year and married at 19 (so went from mom's house to having a husband)...
I didn't truly become independent until I was about 30 and on my own (single)

on top of full time high school student, i work over 40 hours a week ( and its a really good job with awesome pay). I pay for everything from car payments, phone bills, insurance, some food, gas clothing and anything that i want.... My parents still support me in anything that i do, but i don't believe that an 18 year old should have to mommy and daddy for everything

When I was 18, I moved into the dorms at college. I was pretty much on my own EXCEPT that I was still financially dependent on my parents. They paid for my tuition and room and board and for my health insurance. When I came home on vacations, I had to abide by house rules, etc. However, I was responsible for budgeting money while I was at school, keeping my grades up, and finding part-time work to supplement my income.

I graduated high school at 18, began working two weeks later, moved out of my parents home 30 days after that and never returned. I have supported myself and made my own decisions ever since.
