This is a common folly that we all run into. I think this stems from the mistaken assumption that everyone should be well-rounded. We all have different traits. Things that we can do better than most other people. I think that is people would spend more time discovering their talents and cultivating them instead of trying to work on perceived weaknesses we would all realize our true talents quicker and get a sense of accomplishment from doing and getting better at those things we have a true talent for.

I know I'm capable of doing more than I am because I did it for over 20 years in the Navy, for almost 7 years in my last job and for 12 years in this job and for the past 2, my supervisor has been pushing me on male bovine excrement jobs because of racial and sexual discrimination, but I can't prove it. I even have to ask her DO YOU WANT ME TO TAKE THE TRASH BOX TO THE DUMPSTER. I didn't ask once and she got all over me.Probably also because I know more about the project than she does since I was the first one starting in it and she just got pushed into it.
By the way, I'm 60, a married, white male working for a black, single, female who is also supervisor over 4 other black females (3 of the 4 are single). I get along with 2 of them (one is married, one is widowed). The women were not required to get a fork lift license, are not required to do a LOT of 'dirty' jobs. I could go on and on, but some nimrod would accuse ME of being a racist, bigoted pig. Walk in MY shoes for a week and you'd see. Some of the people (men/women/black/white) in associated work spaces see the same thing I do.

I definitely agree. I think most of us feel we should be accomplishing more, being more, having more. But it's all in what we've been taught to perceive of ourselves and our surroundings.
I had tons of thoughts on this, but Michael D. really nailed it, in my mind. So I'll leave well enough alone. Now, did I just forfeit my capability to do more, or was I forfeiting my need to out do someone else, when I felt they had said the perfect thing? ;-)

All of us at sometime or another Einstein said we only use 10% of our brain. God give me the wisdom to change things that I can and know the difference when I cannot change.
Its concentrating on our strengths for eg look at tennis players that put hours into practising, honing their skills to be the best and earn money on the tennis circuit. To be the best you have to be passionate about something do something you love at least you will enjoy yourself while doing it.
