You must be referring to Campbells Russian Dwarf hamsters. The flipping this species is known to display is due to a neurological problem. There are a few neurological problems seen in the commercial breed Campbells, swaying and waltzing are two others that I know of. There are quite a few other health problems too, cataracts, diabetes, cancers. Unfortunately, these problems are becoming more severe and prevalent due to the poor breeding practices of the commercial breeders.

The flipping will not cause harm to your little friend. It's been observed that there are many degrees to the flipping and it's thought to be a kind of seizure disorder. Some do it occassionally, some do it continually. The ones that do it continually are usually humanely euthanized because it significantly impedes their quality of life. Many pet owners find it cute and endearing.

A hamster displaying any of these kind of problems should not be bred.

If you were stuck in a cage for your whole life, you'd flip too!
