is OK for a man to stay home while the wife works?
My girl expects to make over 6 figures when she finishes her phd. I jokingly said I can't wait so I can quit my job, but she got very offended at the thought that I think that thats OK.
Her arguement is that a man is SUPPOSED to work no matter what. Even if I were to marry oprah I should till work?
She obviously strictly adheres to gender roles. What do you think?

Carribean - you fell strongly about it I can tell. And I agree a man should provide for the family. But if it so happens that the women is making big money, then what is the point of the man working just to say that he is? Shouldn't somebody be spending time with the kids?

Men should work and be the primary source of income. Women should stay home and wash dishes and feed the cat.

Again she's right. I could never let my man sit his butt down while I work hard....and especially him expecting something at the end of the day. That just wouldn't work. Men are supposed to support their family. But actually I think both the man and women should work to support the family. It's only fair. I just couldn't look at a man sitting at home while his wife is out there working hard without thinking he's weak and lazy. So no it isn't ok at all. Also if you were married to Oprah...you STILL should be working. Or else it'll look like you don't wear the pants. If it's only your wife working then she has the right to be making all the decisions and leaving you out.

She doesn't adhere to the gender roles or she would have never took her education to the PhD level. I think she's more worried about being used or taken advantage of.
She also might have a double standard and may expect you to make more than she does. So you'll never measure up to be a "real man" in her eyes.
I do agree that you shouldn't be a free loader just because she makes good money. But your job could be taking care of the home. Cooking, cleaning, laundry, yard work, renovating or remodeling the house etc. Believe me that's work!!

I don't accept or reject the old fashioned roles, I have respect in both, that anyone no matter what their gender, can do anything they would like in life.
I think from what you are saying, if I am right, she is a believer in the old fashions, and that is her right. Just laugh at those comments with her and not give them much notice, is what I would suggest.

For me personally it would bother me to be the sole bread winner while my husband stayed home. But that doesn't mean I believe this is wrong to do, just that I would not feel comfortable with it. If two people are doing that and it works for them then great! We are all different. If it bothers you that she feels that way then maybe you should look for someone else. That is what dating is all about. Finding out about each other and seeing if you are compatible

I think that it would be okay if will be doing everything that a woman who stays at home is expected to do, but I do think that since you are a man you will probably want to go back to work very soon

No,
if the guy can not hold a career, then stop finding any excuses.
We both make 6 figures, and let me tell you that's not a whole lot of money at all, we still shop in Wal Mart, no personal jets or anything.

i agree w/ her. The man is supposed to work and the women is too. I just wouldn't be able to support a man while he does nothing unless something was preventing him from working at least make and effort.

Your girlfriend getting her PhD. is probably made up but you ask a good question. Women shouldn't feel being a housewife is a "bad" thing. I'm all for women getting an education but if they choose to have a family I believe it is much better for everyone if she stays home....
