There are several reasons for the fuzz on a tennis ball. First and foremost the fuzz allows the spin of the ball to grip the air more and drop into the court if hit with heavy topspin. This allows for harder hits that stay in the court. Originally the fuzz was added to the ball to help the players see the ball better and make the ball more durable. A ball with short dense fuzz is best for clay court because the nap will not build up over time with clay granules and become heavy. The longer nap on heavy duty balls allows them to last longer on the harder asphalt courts.

Do you mean the green part or the outer most covering? You would be buying tennis balls like crazy if it wasn't there, It helps so the rubber part doesn't get run down as fast.
Hope I helped

it just allows the strings to grip the ball better for spin..and its easier to grip when u toss it...a smooth ball would just roll across the strings on a heavy spin shot and go in some random direction

Buy a lint shaver; it works perfectly and your clothes will look like new again. You just rub it over the surface and it shaves off the lint balls, then you empty the little cup. It's just a few dollars, and runs on batteries.
