This is not about smokers/non smokers its about living in a alleged "free country" which is becoming less and less free, if people want to smoke then why should this government make it harder and harder for people.
people complain that smoking costs the NHS 1.5 billiion a year, yet the tax smokers pay contributes 7.5 billion per year to the nhs.
So lets see what happens when the NHS does not have this money each and every year. god the waiting lists are long now...
All together this country is being Americanised, how long will it be before you have to have health insurance before a hospital will treat you....USA started this stupid anti smoking campaign and the Uk have been stupid enough to follow. If the goverment was really concerned about smokers & non-smokers health then surely they would have banned cigarettes years ago.
Yes I can understand that people who dont smoke should not have to sit in a place where people are smoking, but why ban it, all you do is provide a seperate area. Smokers are a minority, having their freedom of choice removed, smokers today............what will it be tomorrow

Earl that is stupid, do you mean walk every where, thats never gonna happen is it. Some people live miles away from there home.!!!
As for smoking i can agree with some points respecting non-smokers but i still think there should be a seperated areas for smokers. As said before we all know the tax will go up on every thing when the government decides they need another pay rise. How long before it becomes illegal and is sold like drugs is now, that'll create more problems.

I smoke and when the law comes into force I will abide by it, when I go out for a meal now I go to smokers area and if someone was eating their food I would wait till they were finished and lots of smokers are the same as in respect for others so why can it not be the other way around, as many have answered smoking is not illegal so therefore it should be down to the individual.

I actually have nothing agaist smokers, my mum smokes and so do some of my friends. When the ban was first introuduced I thought it was a load of tosh and unfair to the smokers. But thinking about now.. it is very unfair on the non smokers having to breath in smoke.. which can kill just as much as smoking the ciggy urself. I live in Spain so it doesnt effect me. I do worry for the pub owners tho, it cant help them.. so maybe a good half way is to make a rule of smoking rooms that must have smoke exstarctor fans in them. That way every1s happy!

Pubs, clubs, trains stations, bus stops, work, most confined public places basically.
I gave up on Friday. Today I walked past a bus stop and smelled someone smoking, and it made me want one.
Last time I gave up, I caved in on a works outing down the pub.
I think the ban is a fantastic idea, for smokers (majority of whom WANT to give up) and non smokers alike.
UPDATE: 3 days now yaay! I am amused by the idea of separate smoking areas, a kind of apartheid, like 'he wont drink with me just cos of the colour of my lungs!' I mean come on, when you go out is the entire group a bunch of either smokers or non smokers??
When they banned it on trains and buses I thought I would die but after a while you forget about it and it becomes the norm.
UPDATE: 4 days now, yaay! Passed the first test of having a drink and not caving in :)
Keep smelling it in the street - now I understand why ex-smokers biatch about it the most lol!
Ban the lot of it hehehe!!

The problem I have it with it is that this is just another step to losing our rights. The fact is, smoking is legal. They stop people from smoking in places, yet continue to use cigarettes to increase taxes. Smokers are being used on both ends. If it is such a HUGE deal and people can't stand it, then making smoking illegal period.
This country is about freedom of choice. You don't like smoking, don't go where they are smoking. It wasn't good enough that special smoke rooms were created. It had to be banned completely, disallowing someone from doing something that is already legal. This is just one small step that is an example of how we are slowly losing our rights as citizens. The government wants so badly to control every aspect of our personal lives and you people allow it.
I'm a non-smoker.

Actually, it bans people from smoking pretty much anywhere in public.
Bebe:
Ever stood next to a running car? Ever driven by a manufacturing plant? Ever stood next to someone breathing? Those all contain harmful toxins too. Should we ban those? Cars emit more harmful substances than cigarettes (and more people drive than smoke). Manufacturing plants also put out more toxic fumes than a cigarette. As far as breathing goes, anybody who's passed the second grade knows that our lungs exhale CO2, which is very harmful to us (hence we get rid of it). Drinking also kills people (drunk driving, degrading your liver) are you going to ban that? How about smoking weed? I bet you think that's okay (most liberals do). Stop trying to take away people's rights. You want other people to lose rights so that you can have yours. It goes both ways, dear!
Now, I'm all in favor of no smoking in restaurants, bars, businesses, etc., even I would agree that it's nasty to have smoke building up inside. But when your outside, people can do as they please. The wind blows it away and if you still happen to smell it, slow down or pass the person by. Big deal!

This is the ban - ' the ceasation of the british people by law smoking in enclosed public spaces' this includes train stations, airports, hotels and pubs and clubs.
Too much fuss is made of this ban, its a positive ban for EVERYONE. It means non smokers can finally get their way and enjoy a smoke free evening out. Also it helps smokers cut down or quit smoking. If smokers want to continue smoking in pubs then they can pop outside for one with their mates. Most pubs and clubs you will find will start to cater for these smokers with outdoor patios, porches and outdoor heaters provided. I'm all up for it. Go to Ireland and see how enjoyable it is sitting in a smoke free pub its amazing and everyone is happier.

I cannot wait until smoking is no longer an issue and they move on to bigger and worse issues!
Maybe they will ban Perfume next, because I know some people who put it on and it literally takes my breathe away, can't be good for you in the long run, it has chemicals in it! Honestly to me this is a bunch of BS, people need to mind their own business! There is always something some one has to think of to do to someone just to interfere with someone else's rights. Here soon there won't be any rights left, and then we will all live in glass houses.

Everyone should stop whining.
If you're inconvenienced as a smoker.. maybe you should quit?
Because.. uhh.. smoking is bad? MMkay?
Everyone is saying how they're going to keep smoking regardless. And.. of course they will! it's that same stupidity that made them look at a piece of paper with some tobacco rolled up in it and think.. wow, that's something I'd love to set on fire and inhale!
But the bottom line is.. it's the law. Like it or not. And I'm glad I can finally take my kids to a restaurant without having to ask some idiot to put out their cigarette so I can taste my food.
