My faves are :
New Orleans - was there last month and it still rocks. amazing city and region. Stay in the French Quarter, which Katrina amazingly left untouched.
San Francisco - chilled vibe, wonderful. Go out to see some of the redwoods, take a drive over the Golden Gate bridge and find some.
New York - it's a must for a 1st time american visitor. See Liberty from the Statten Island ferry for free. Empire State Bldg, views are stunning.
Las Vegas - if you must, but don't stay too long, it's manic. Hotel New York New York is fun. Your room is in a skyscraper.
Some other visits -
Fort Worth, near Dallas - go see some cowboys
Visit some area where the Amish live, for a look at simplicity. Take out west from Philadelphia to somewhere like Lancaster, Pa and on to Intercourse - a real quaint old town! Old horse drawn buggies a plenty.
Don't forget Hawaii, a few hours flight from San Francisco, whilst you're there. The Big Island of Hawaii is quieter and beautiful. Volcano is still live there.
Good luck! I love the US, I'm sure you will too. Rob

I agree with most of the previous answers You have to see the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas is so false it's really enjoyable, but only for a couple of days.
Death Valley and Yosemite National Park are also must sees, although the Park can get very busy in midsummer.
If you're travelling by car the do Highway one from LA to San Francisco, SF is a great City to explore.
As you can see I've done the West Coast a lot over the years but have not yet done the rest and I really envy you your six months.
Have a great time!!

I've gotta say the cliche things. Like the Grand Canyon. It's pretty amazing. You can't go to America without visiting Washington D.C.! I would also suggest going to Chicago, it's a great city... But save it for the summer, in the winter it can get cold! San Francisco is an amazing city also. From there you could drive down the coast of California (amazing views) and visit Hollywood. Everyone is going to say New York, but I wouldn't put it as a first priority. It's not that great of a city, in my opinion. It's pretty overrated, but I would still suggest going there considering it is one of the most important, popular cities in the world! The Colorado Rockies are great for skiing! And Philadelphia is historical and all if you're into that. That is cool that you are coming here! Have a lot of fun. Stop at my house and say hi (just kidding).

Cheesy as it may sound - the old Route 66 offers some pretty interesting sights and leads through a variety of landscapes. You get everything from big cities like Chicago through rolling hills and Oklahoma red earth and farmland to the deserts of the Southwest. Along the way there are lots of pretty towns and places to visit. Easily done by Greyhound, by the way! Las Vegas is definitely worth the trip, and so is the Mall of America in St. Paul, Minnesota.
When I visited the US a few years ago I steered clear of all the big cities such as N.Y. and L.A and had the best times in the smaller towns off the beaten tracks. If this is your cup of tea, then travelling by Greyhound is unbeatable - you automatically meet new people every day and are transported effortlessly while being able to hop off the bus wherever you please. Pure bliss for someone who isn't too keen on meticulously planning every step ahead. ;o)

I spent a similar amount of time there and there are so many things to see and do you could spend 6 years and still have more things you'd like to experience. A few of my favourite things were:
The Grand Canyon (absolutely mindblowing)
Chicago (great city, go see a Cubs game)
San Francisco (Alcatraz is brilliant, food in Chinatown amazing)
Las Vegas (full of wackos but great fun)
Austin (great live music)
Drive up the Pacific Coast Highway
New York (visit Ground Zero for a humbling experience)
Rocky Mountains
Soak up the sun in Santa Barbara.
Personally, I'd stay away from the tourist tat in Florida and I wasn't particulary impressed with the rather sleazy Hollywood either.

All of the above destinations are awesome to see. I live in Nevada, 400 miles North of Las Vegas, and Vegas has got a lot of attractions. Yellowstone National Park is another good one.
I have traveled through 36 states and I have seen beauty in all of them.
The Statue of Liberty is beautiful.
I liked Washington DC, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Arlington National Cemetary, Lincoln Memorial, John F. Kennedy Memorial, Washington Memorial, The Pentagon.
I loved the country through Tennesee, Kentucky and Virginia.
Pennsylvania, I got to see Mendonites and the Amish community. I also went to Hershey, Pennsylvania when the main factory for hershey's candies are. It is a nice little place.
There are so many beautiful places, and too many to name them all.
Welcome to the United States of America and enjoy your visit. Sincerely, Juanita

Take time to visit New Orleans. Though Hurricane Katrina had an utterly devastating effect on a vast area, New Orleans is still a wonderul place to see and soak up the atmosphere. In particular, try to make it there during the annual Jazz Festival (held at the end of April/beginning of May).

I have visited the states many times and I could give you the
address's of some casino's around Michigan and Indiana..
Well, most of them really..lol
Anyway, Michigan is nice summer or winter,
You could try the UP and visit Hiawatha country,
St Ignace for the car show (september time)
Macinaw Island for the fort, and the Grand Hotel featured in the film 'Somewhere in time'
Soo Locks (Saint San Marie). Cross the Saint Mary river into Canada.
The UP of Michigan is often over looked but a real wilderness.
Anyway ..ENJOY THE TRIP...wherever you go.

you absolutely must go up to the Top of the Rock!! Its the Rockefeller Centre in NY, also go see ground zero just cos everyone should go there if they can! Other than that Central Park, Bloomingdales, Empire State etc all need to be done.
The great thing about Manhattan is you could probably do all the above things in a day with not much trouble but try and spend more time in all of them! its quite close together and very easy to get around!!
Dont bother with the Statue of LIberty though its not special at all!!
Hope this helps and enjoy your time
