Since you mentioned "child" then I would say non toxic finger paints are great to children who are about 2. At least the age where they wont put it in their mouths, even though it is non toxic, it should be age appropriate. If you go to Michael's craft store, there are many ways a child can paint. They can paint on felt with characters on them, they can paint on foam with glitter paint, they can paint by numbers, they can paint pottery, they can paint on canvas, they can paint on wooden objects, they can paint on just about anything you can think of. You just have to keep in mind what the child's interests are, their age appropriate medium, and supervision needed to do the project. Have fun.

I'd say at least three. Most paints sold to kids are non-toxic but it won't exactly warm your heart your heart to see a little kid eating paint or something. No matter what age you start them at, make sure the paint is washable. Also purchase a smock. You don't have to start out on finger painting. It's fun to paint with big brushes. Both are quite messy so carpet and clothing beware! Basically, I'd say that 3-4+ is a good age for children to start painting. (Painting is quite standard in kindergarten although I remember mainly water paints for some reason.)

If you mean serious painting that may have toxins or isn't washable, I'd say somewhere in the tween and teen area.

If a baby is sitting up in a high chair, you can use coloured puddings as finger paints. The curious 6 month old will love painting pictures on their high chair table with them.

Otherwise, ensure that the paint and the tools or brushes are age appropriate.

My mother held a pencil in my hand and followed my movements before I was a year old, before I could talk. I see art as my first language now. I liked Carlito's comment, but really if it isn't toxic and you don't have ridged ideas about making a mess...or about making art, and as long as they are not endangering themselves, anytime is a good time. It might be wise to wait till they can sit up and are smearing their food around on their own though...LOL!

Every child is an individual. Supervise don't go nuts on telling them what to do, it robs them of the discovery buz! They will do it without you anyway, with or without the paint. Kids explore mark making naturally with whatever they can get their mits into. It is part of our nature. Amazing!

Today I am an artist and I love knowledge! If there is a connection I can't prove it. It doesn't matter though because it is healthy and helps us grow.

Have fun!

When my children were under 1 yr. old they attended a day care that allowed them to finger paint with edible items such as pudding and yogurt. About the age of 18 months they went form the nursery to the toddler room and they used non toxic finger paint. If they can follow simple directions, such as don't put your hand in your mouth and come wash your hands, they should be able to paint with supervision.

My three year old says that 2 is the best age, so long as you use non toxic paints and have lots of newspaper.
My husband says, 14, so they dont make a mess!

Although it depends on your child, it is probably safest if they are capable of comprehending basic instructions...and aren't still putting things in their mouths all the time! My daughter was about 2 1/2 when she painted for the first time, but I kept a very close eye on her so she didn't eat the paintbrush!

children can paint starting from as young as 1-2 years old. Start with fingerpainting, but be ready for cleaning up..it's a huge but hilarious mess! (make sure to put garbage bags/newspapers all over the floor & walls first.) Have fun!!!
