Politics apart, UNO has many wings like ILO, International Court of Justice, UNESCO where a lot of useful work is being transacted. Although the General Council and Security Council are more powerful and they have proved themselves to be ineffective in resolving the problems of the nations, they offer a fora for airing the views of the disputing nations. After all, discussion where the nations give vent to their ideals and feelings is also useful in a way.

Even though the UN did & does not sanction our going into Iraq, there are a number of member nations that have sent troops in with us, although you only read about the British. At one time there were some S. Korean's, Australian & maybe about 100 chinese, although the chinese withdrew quickly.
The UN does provide a meeting place for it's members to try & work things out before they go too far. Unfortunatly, few members pay any attention to the UN. They by-pass it to settle things on their own, as we have done. So, perhaps it is usless but not because the idea was wrong but because no one would give it a chance to work.

Yes - more than ever. But a) it needs massive reform in its decision-making bodies, and b) it needs the ability to compel powerful nations (including the US) to comply with its resolutions.
But let's not forget that the UN is a huge body that coordinates an awful lot of good work through a huge administration, often in very difficult circumstances. UNESCO, the UNHCR, peacekeeping missions, relief missions, the World Health Organisation, the Commission on Sustainable Development, the Commission on Human Rights, and many, many other good and worthy causes are overseen by the UN.
Of course the UN is very far from perfect, and of course many people disagree with what it does. It moves slowly, it is overly bureaucratic, and it is often paralysed by in-fighting and domestic squabbles. But what it can do, no one else can, and it exercises a unique moral authority. Its flaws are almost as great as its ambitions, but we must not allow this to obscure its great potential, and indeed the great work that it currently does.

The UN? Yes,it should be needed in today's world...the idea of UN is great,a world where everything can be solve through diplomacy ,but it simply isn't working...As long as some countries believe that they are above the law,the UN can't do anything...Unfortunately UN is powerless...hey can't solve little things ,see the minor conflict between Romania and Ukraine over Bastroe...they can't solve this and we expect them to solve world conflicts like the Israeli -Palestinian conflict...
