I want to get my tubes tied, but now I am haing second thoughts? I am know thinking of the 10year IUD. I am worried though since I am have trouble with the side effects of the pill that I will have a problem with the IUD. The LNg IUD can cause hormonal side effects similar to those caused by oral contraceptives, such as breast tenderness, mood swings, headaches, and acne. This is rare. When side effects do happen, they usually go away after the first few months. I would like to hear from some women who have this to let me know their experience. Thanks for any input.

I had lots of trouble with the hormones in birth control pills, so I switched to the 10-year copper (non-hormonal) IUD and I LOVE it. It's reliable and has no hormonal side effects, which is great. There are some side effects, though -- mostly increased cramps and menstrual bleeding. They were pretty bad for the first couple months, but decreased significantly after the first year. It was totally worth it, though, to be off the hormones. And knowing that it's completely (and pretty much instantly) reversible is nice, too.

I also got the mirena IUD after being told I could not take oral birth control because of a medical condition. It is great, I haven't had a period in 3 years, just some spotting the first year. The hormones in the mirena IUD only act locally in the reproductive system, so you don't get the normal side effects of the pill.

I have the 10yr IUD and LOVE it!!! You never have to worry about a thing. I had been on the pill for years, and then went to the IUD after having some other problems (PCOS)... the only thing is, is if you have cramps now, you will have them worse (Ibprofren helps with this), or if you never had them.. then you will have them now. That is really it. You don't feel it, it is just there, and you don't have to get it checked or anything. It's the greatest thing I've ever done... and it's lik 99.9% effective. Also, you are fertile the second you get it removed... if you decided to have kids again later. I'd say go for it and skip the surgery... the only problem is, is that many insurances will not pay for it, and it is about $500.00.

I have the Mirena which is the 5 year IUD with the hormones. I love having it. I was also looking for permanent birth control and my Dr talked me into this. I'm very pleased that he did. I don't have heavy painful periods any more or have to worry about birth control. I haven't had any side effects from it except off and on spotting.

I had an IUD (without hormones in it - may have been called the Copper-T) between my second and third child, and while the carefree-ness of it was great I was later upset to learn that it can technically be an abortifacent because it prevents an already fertilized egg from implanting into the uterine wall. Just thought that should be mentioned in the interest of full information.
