yes it is ,,,and yes ,its called write to zero .the easiest i have found to use is the one that comes from seagate ,it is for there hard drives but it will work on the rest of the hard drives also. it returnes the hard drive to factory spects no shadows left . after the the program runs reformat and reinstall your system and relax not even a divorce lawyer can get any thing from your computer after that.

Yes everything is saved to the hard disc and can be deleted but simply deleting only make the computer forget about the deleted file, To really clean a hard disc you can get hold of a program called MAX.LLF, Which is a low level format program from maxtor this will dlete everything from your hard disc and leave you with a clean(raw) hard disc then all you need do is install your operating system without a partition and your away..

one thing that has not been made clear is that the 'delete' action does not delete (get rid of) a file/foto/video or whatever it simply tells the OS to ignore the fact that it is there.
ALL files can be recovered if they are not written over as physically, they are still there.
i used to use a util called ' system mechanic' which had a military standard 'cover up' procedure....as mentioned elsewhere, this fills the hard drive with '1's and '0's several times....be warned, this is a time consuming excercise and the files will be lost forever.

You don’t actually need a government program to totally delete the hard drive
You can write 1 and 0 to each sector of the hard drive.
What are you trying to hide?

yes everything is saved on a hard drive. Yes it is possible to delete, you can format it like 3 times, but sometimes that isn't effective enough. The best is way it to get a shredder program. That makes it totally unreadable.

Files on the hard drive stays there unless you delete them.
Technically, deleting them simply makes the space available, the files might still be there and can be recovered.
To permanently delete files, you usually get a 'scruber' program.

If you REALLY, REALLY, REALLY need to get stuff off a hard drive I've heard you need to physically destroy it, and thats not so easy.
I 'spose the next best thing would be to go out on a boat, wait till you're out a mile at least then throw it overboard, then pray it doesn't get washed up on a shore somewhere LOL.
OR drive a car back and forth over it till its well and truly smashed up?

not everything is saved on the hard drive, only things that you want it to i.e: pictures, documents, music, movies and programs. it is possible to delete the memory to prevent recovery by using certain harddrive utlity programs, like, windows eraser or wipedrive pro. simply formatting your harddrive is not enough. files are still recoverable.

you can delete things off the hard drive, even reformat it. BUT if you have things like kiddie pron on there, the authorities can and do recover it, only a govt level program can totally eradicate things....
