Slavery was used as very cheap labor for farming, housework and other things. It was mean though.......

First of all you could write a book about this.
As to your question....
Slavery did have an economic benfit to the country, 4.5 million people working for "free" is a benefit to the economy despite the tremendous evil involved.
What is often overlooked are the years of conflict between the races that continues to day. Many people (white) feel that after the slaves were freed that they had no excuse about success, i.e. that they should go forth and prosper. However, there was little action taken to try and lift the former slaves out of the poverty and oppression they faced after freedom (reconstruction ended in 1877). Generation after generation of apathy towards African Americans has made their situation in this country difficult.
Mind you, my answer touches on only one aspect (and briefly at that) of your question. I hope it helps.

Not much. Slavery appeared to be cheap labor, but it wasn't really. First the slaves had to be purchsed, and then they had to be fed, housed, clothed and, as most did not speak English, they had to be closely supervised in order to do their assigned chores. Then there was the problem of how to cope with slaves once they did learn the language, once they became educated, and once they realized that what had happened was wrong. Slavery was one of the root causes of the Civil War, which resulted in major disruptions in the traditional southern way of life.

It made a lot of people very wealthy.
It broke in vast tracts of land.
It created and unending bitterness in the black community that not even time can heal

It provided cheap labor for farming. Too bad we went to cotton, there are those that think if we had gone to silk farming, we wouldn't have needed slaves.
