I've been living in this area over 30 years..I graduated from the University of Florida. I now have a family and it's a great place to raise kids. I know someone else said it wasn't a good place for kids but they probably are college students and don't know all the opportunities for kids. They have a alot of great summer camps you can go to and most are somehow related to the University of Florida. The beach is only 1 1/2 to the east and there are many rivers and lakes only 20 min. away.

University of Florida - They are crazy about their college and their college sports.

Lots and lots and lots of clubs.

Not much family wise.

Medium size city with insane traffic and parking issues.

Lots of greenery.

Lots of apartment complexes.

It's your typical party college town, except you can't take romantic moonlit walks by the lake. Unless you don't mind being gator snacks!!! LOL

And when on campus, beware of running into gators. The real kind, not the fans. They are all over the place because of Lake Alice. Once, while I was a freshman, one parked himself out on the main road to and from the dorms and back up all sorts of traffic all afternoon. He didn't move until the sun went down.

(Actually, Bundy was excuted in Raiford, FL, which is about an hour north of Gainesville.)

Actually Florida's death row is in Starke, FL, not Gainesville. It's a college town. From what I have seen it's a nice town. It does have an airport with 2 airlines servicing it.

For me, thinking of Gainesville brings to mind the student killings that occured there almost twenty years ago.

The story is told online here: http://www.crimelibrary.com/serial_killers/predators/rolling/gain_1.html

I know there is/was a prison there. And Ted Bundy was put to death in its electric chair.
