would it be safe walking back from a show in the evening to the hotel

The theater is right in the heart of the theater district in the Loop. This is a very safe area, and you should have no problem walking to/from your hotel.
Also, cabs will be everywhere if you decide at the last moment you do not want to walk.
Keep in mind that an incident can happen anywhere anytime, so be smart, but I would not worry if my wife were walking alone in this area.

Without question it is very safe. The theater district always has many people walking around and a good show of cops too.

Yes - there are people around that area at almost all hours of the day.
