I tried to verify using just my bank account, but I'm not sure it's working. If I buy anything over the Internet, wouldn't it show up in my PayPal account?

No you must have both a bank account and a credit card on Paypal in order to become a verified user. Trust me I found this out the hard way. I started with a bank account and it said I was still unverified then I say heck I'll go ahead and add my credit card then after doing a few steps of going through some e-mails and answering some questions I became a verified user.
