I am Italian and Macedonia is Slavic. I have a very good friend that is from the todays Northern Greece part of Macedonia. And has told me what his grandparents had when threw in this part of Macedonia. Which is pretty sad. These Macedonians were ethnic cleansed from this part of Macedonia. and now Greeks still do not recognizes the Macedonians that live their or the name Macedonia. It looks to me that Greeks are scared Macedonia will want there land and people recognize that is why they claim the only Macedonia is in Greece. It is sad to see Greek inventing so much propaganda against the Macedonians.

I'm Albanian but my parents come from Macedonia. The Macedonians in FYR are Slavs. They use the Slavic language. They are closely related to the Serbians and Bulgarians with language, and customs, and they all share the Orthodox christian religion. Alexander "The Great" has no relation to them. The Slavs migrated around the 6th century A.D. in the Balkans. The use of the Macedonian name and references to Alexander "The Great" are purely symbolic. The Greeks resent all this because they fear it is pretext to a territorial claim(in Greece there are a large number of Slavic Macedonians). The Greeks have no ethnic divisions in their constitution and in my opinion are guilty of cultural genocide not only with the Slavic Macedonians but also with the Albanians of Epirus.
Macedonia is not heaven on earth. I had the joy(not) of living there for a few years of my life when I was 10 to 12. Those two years I'd describe as in Dante's "Inferno" as purgatory maybe but no not heaven. It is full of garbage, the people are a bunch of cut throats. There is a great divide between the Macedonians and Albanians. "A happy multi-ethnic state" wrong again the two sides sit across from one another waiting for a chance to attack one another and it will take place I see it in there faces. The Macedonians are U.S. allies unlike their neighbors to the north Serbia and that is what kept the country together(that and the fact that they changed there discriminatory policies towards the Albanians living their). I they had not played there cards right the same fate as Cyprus would have befallen on Macedonia. In the future I think it will either be overran by the Albanians from within(the Albanians popullation is a lot larger than they care to admit around 40% not counting the large number of emigres such as myself) or that Macedonia will be a future puppet state of the Albanian influence in the Balkans this what I foresee in the future. You wanted a neutral opinion something not Greek or Macedonian and I gave you one. Hope this help you.

Most people in Europe think that Macedonia is a Slavic country in South-Eastern Europe. That's all they know.
Some (including me) have heard that the northernmost Greek province is also called Macedonia, but they don't think that the two areas, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and the Greek province of Macedonia are anything to do with each other.
We're certainly not aware of any arguments about which is Greek and which is Slav. It is surely clearcut?

I can only refer to the Republic of Macedonia. It is Slavic with a great number of mixed population, such as Albanians. Things are always pretty much mixed on the Balkans. Language is so similar to Bulgarian that sometimes on National television news in Bulgaria no translation applies to Macedonian politics, giving interview.
Macedonia has been part of many countries in the past, including Bulgaria and it is true that many Bulgarians consider it Bulgarian. Nevertheless Bulgaria never had any claims towards it and Bulgaria was the first country to admit Macedonia's independence from Yugoslavia.
Macedonians resent being called Bulgarians and what was said about the propaganda is correct. But now that Bulgaria has joined the EU, a lot of people start to reconsider and file papers for Bulgarian citizenship.

approximately 410 B.C. King Achelaos of Macedon transferred his capital from Aigai (see Édessa and Vérgina) to what replaced into then the north coast of the Thermaic Gulf and based the city of Pélla, wherein the Attic tragedian Euripides spent the final years of his life and Alexander the large replaced into born in 356 B.C. the city seems to have had 2 acropolises, one on the positioning of the present-day village of Palaiá Pélla (1km/.75mi north of the main highway) and the different to the west of this, the place partitions possibly belonging to the palace have been discovered (internet site II). From there city prolonged south as a great way simply by fact the former island of Phakos, to the south of the line. Following the destruction of city via the Romans after the conflict of Pydna (196 B.C.), of which Pliny supplies an account, Pélla disappeared from sight and replaced into rediscovered purely in 1957 via Makaronas and Petsas. The excavations finished considering that then have been quite effective.

There are 2 Macedonias. Surprising enough?
The first Macedonia is Greek-Macedonia. I studied in a US university and we were emphatically taught that Alexander was Greek-Macedonian.
Meaning that the ancient Macedonians were Greeks.
The other Macedonia is very recent state and it is a Slavic country. It is the modern Republic of Macedonia.
No relation between the 2 Macedonias.
The modern republic of Macedonia is a multi-ethnic state with a majority Slav-Macedonian population and a minority of Albanian-Macedonian population.
The Greeks are over reacting because there are few Slav-Macedonians who claim the history of Greek-Macedonia as theirs.
It seems to be really frustrating for the Greeks.

To be honest, most of the rest of the world doesn't think about this at all. Especially Americans. Most people don't know where Macedonia is on a map.
To me, I think of Macedonia as being historically Greek, but I know that's just an impression. It is not an educated opinion.

Macedonia is Republic of Macedonia. I have read some books about Alexander The Great and they all tell that he was a macedonian. I have some information that the color of the skin of the ancient greeks was darker that the skin of the ancient macedonians and that proves that Alexander was a macedonian not greek! However he respected the greek culture and language, but as I stated he wasn't a Greek citizen. He defeated Athena and some other Greek cities and with that he united all the nations on the Balkan peninsula.
