Jane Austen's novels are good. Jane Eyre is really good, too!

I would recommend Blue Bloods and Masquerade by Melissa de la Cruz. (Masquerade isn't out yet, it's going to be published in a month or so). But it's a new vampire series set in New York City. Not as focused on romance as Twilight, but it's one of the subplots...
Also Peeps and Last Days by Scott Westerfeld. Again, romance isn't the number one plot focus, but it's there beneath the surface. A lot of action.

Other romance novels with excitement...you should definitely read A GREAT AND TERRIBLE BEAUTY by Libba Bray and REBEL ANGELS. The third novel will be out this fall, SWEET FAR THING. Fantasy set in Victorian England. Very exciting. Romance. And the style is very similar in some ways to Meyer. Same 'can't-put-down' feeling where you're swept into the story.

Well, there are always classics (The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston LeRoux ). The Uglies, Pretties, and Specials are also REALLY good. As for vampires, check out Vampirates. My friend and I just loved it. What else...... Story Time by Edward Bloor.... Anything (not a title) by Cornelia Funke........

As for romance novels that have some real substance to them....try Nora Roberts. She's amazing! I'm a bit biased because she's a Maryland author and I was born and raised there, but she's great and her books are always winners.
