Hicories, pecans and walnuts are all related to one another and they all have a "nut cycle". One year, the yield will be terrible, but the next might be fantastic. Black walnuts are on a three year cycle, most hickories that I know of, are on a two year cycle. So next year, you'll probably have a bunch of them.

it can take up to 5 years for a tree to show sighns of stress . also if its realy thick and full it probly needs to be pruned that will help for this year good luck

is it the type of tree that needs a male & female? if so does your mom have both? perhaps the ,male was in the neighborhood and is no longer?
