I just replaced the heating element in my 40 gallon electric water heater and I am still not getting hot water. Any other ideas of what the problem may be? I would like to avoid replacing the whole thing if possible.

if everything is connected properly - there should be a reset button somewhere by the thermostat. You may have to punch it.

I'm sure that you've already flipped the panel switch? I don't mean to sound silly, but I've been there done that too....teehee

Hi, you sound like me, I always want to have to avoid having to replace the whole unit, just check be sure you are getting power to it, go to your main breaker switch it off and wait two seconds then switch it back on. If it comes on it will take a while to heat up.., meanwhile check to see if the fuse is blown out. If none of that is the reason it could be the thermostat. If you don't know what you are doing get a friend or someone to check it for you, if you call a repair they will surely over charge you. But by any means I hope you get it fix because I know what it's like to have a water heater not working, it's cold showers...for you! You can get by just washing you hair in cold water you'll manage until you get it fix. Surprising the shampoo is warmer than the water..lol Good luck.

Have you checked the circuit breaker to make sure that it isn't tripped? If you have power then there is only three things it could be the thermostat, plugged supply pipes or your water heater is completely full of settlement. If you get water when you turn on the hot water faucet then we can rule out plugged pipes.I would say then that you should have your thermostat checked out. And hopefully the water heater isn't full of settlement but you could check that by opening the drain valve located towards the bottom of the unit.If that's okay it would almost have to be the thermostat. If all else fails you will have to replace.Take care and may God bless you.

The first thing I would check is to make sure the hot water heater circuit breaker has been reset. Next, double check your connections. You could have miswired the thermostat and/or heating element. If you have a VOM (volt-ohmmeter), DMM (digital multimeter), or even just a simple voltage tester, you can see what's getting power and what's not.

I'm guessing you checked to make sure the breaker was on? If you replaced both heating elements and the fuse is on and still no hot water, you may have a faulty thermostat and should replace as well.

Check the element you just changed out. If it was defective, it will have an open circuit...infinite resistance. The thermostat could be defective or you might not have power at the heater. Check with a multimeter.

Your heating element may have blown a fuse. Check your fuse box. You may also have a bad thermostat in there. You also need to give it time to heat the water up.
