Yes for most things. Anything that does not say you can take this. Like Linux shareware. It is not compatible with Windows. Anything that is a registered trademark and not allowed by maker is illegal to file share..

The act of file sharing is completely legal.
Now, if you're sharing illegal content, then that is illegal. Such content would be: pirated music, software, porn, etc.
It is legal to share non copywritten materials.
