I already have an account; I just want to know if you can only use the account directly through PayPal.com.

To use paypal you need to set up an account on it.
To setup an account on it you need a credit card.
You need access to that credit card statement in order to become a "trusted member".

That's it.

If you mean using paypal directly at any website you are purchasing from, then it would depend if the website accepts paypal. If it does, then once you initiate the purchase and indicate to pay through paypal, it will automatically bring you to the paypal site to complete the purchase.

When U make a purchase, U automatically get an invoice in
your mailbox. U simply click "pay now" button and everything
is done when U enter paypal password. Ebay sends you another
email confirming payment has been made when U are done.

No you have to sign up for it and I highly recommend it because they make sure you get refunded if something goes wrong. It's connected to your bank account. A lot of ebayers use it.
