I usaully feed the squirrels in the morning but I haven't seen one in about a month -- I was just wondering if squirrels hibernate or something when it gets really cold? Thanks

Nope, they stay active all year, hence the reason they bury nuts "for the winter." The poor little guys, they're probably traveling far and wide looking for not only food, but open water. They're thirsty, I'm sure. If you can get a heater for your birdbath, it'll keep the water from freezing and allow the birds & the squirrels to drink and stay healthy during this awful time of year.

Earlier this week, we had a small blizzard that dumped two feet of snow in 24 hours. I thought for sure that "my" squirrels would be smart and stay huddled in their nest. Nope. Two greys were sitting on the back porch that morning, waiting for their peanuts.
They didn't hang around like usual though. They just ate their peanuts and split. Old habits die hard--??? Oh, and it was just a fraction above zero at the time. One, maybe two degrees. Those two looked like puffballs with tails!

yes they do and they use their tails to cover their face. of course this is in only the real cold parts of the world ... many places, you'll see squirrels year round.

Yes they hibernate :) the only reason i know that is from spongebob when sandy has to hibernate in winter and spongebob prevents her from doing it :) haha yep

Yes they stay in their nests and are almost frozen, but somehow their metabolism slows down so much they don't freeze. They sleep with their fluffy tails over their noses.

They are all over in my neighborhood and I live in MN so I dont know about anywhere else but they dont here
