I used a cut-to-fit furnace filter, which slides into a horizontal 1 1/2" slot at about eye level. It has now fallen down inside the cold-air return duct to about ankle level. Any creative suggestions of how to get it out of there without taking apart the duct?

get a 'claw' from an automotive store. It's a tool about 2 feet long with a claw at the end and a button at the other end that you push to open the claw.
Reach in with the tool, claw open, and try to snag the filter with it. Release the button to close the claw and gently pull back.
