The significance of a knighthood, is that you have been recognised by government for your services to a particular sport / cause / charity etc. The Queen does not decide who she wants to have this title. The recipients are chosen by the government, from various names suggested to them, by party members or members of the public.( Anybody can put forward some ones` name for an honour like OBE CBE etc.) When a person uses their title, it is apparent to others that they have done something special to have received it. It does not change who that person is, it does not change their social class or standing. There may be a certain `snob` value to it for some people, and they may find that it `opens doors` for them that previously were closed. But it remains a " thank you" from their country to the recipient.

my uncle was knighted by queen Elizabeth. so were some other family members i have.
i don't think the social status changes. here in Canada we don't call the person sir. instead the person just has the title or initials of the title after there name. the medals may be worn on formal occasions and there is a booklet that tells the person when he may wear the medals. other then that i have not been made aware of any other differences .

It is good publicity but nothing else.
Knighthood Today
In Great Britain, the queen bestows knighthood on men and women who are accomplished or have served England in an outstanding way. Men are called “sir;” women are called “dame.”

The "quiet" people in the background who really do good deeds, do not get recognised for knighthoods or dames. They may get OBE or CBE.
So it is all based on how you known (politicians friends/ films stars/ sports stars/etc.
Some may deseve it, such as Bob Geldof.
But Mick Jagger?????????????

Its effectively a hollow title. Noone outside of royalty recognizes it worth anything, and those among royalty consider it nothing but a farce.

I think it's pretty cool to have Sir in front of your name.
You sound like you're from a King Arthur's tale.
Makes you sound more important basically.

Nowadays it`s a VERY hollow honour - you can get one simply by giving Blair money.
