Mine, which flies pretty nicely, is 1:1 pretty much.

1. Some do, and some don't. You can use thin balsa in some cases and/or regular heat-shrink covering material in others. It depends on the model, and what part of the model. 2. For display models, elmers contractors glue, available at most lumber suppliers, works well. Some will specify a glue type. (I use it on RC aircraft for some things.) 3. Depends on the kit, but sanding tools, model pins to hold things, small clamps, hand drill and/or "dremel" tool, etc. They ARE paintable, but MOST builders today use heat-shrink plastic on major items like wings, etc.
