I toss and turn back and forth until I get tired of that and somehow fall asleep, possibly hours later.

I've suffered from insomnia for over 40 years -- here are some things that really work
1- take a shower (rests you and resets body temperature)
2- eat a small turkey sandwich (tryptophan helps with sleep -- ever wonder why everybody sleeps after Thanksgiving dinner?)
3- warm milk with honey (another source of tryptophan)
4- camomille tea (a soothing herbal tea)
I know how frustrating it is, but just resting is better than sitting at the computer. Go to bed and count backwards from 100... you may not get past 80.
Sweet dreams!

Here are some tips that might help you:
MAKE YOUR BEDROOM STRICTLY FOR SLEEPING. Your brain is 'trained' to think of certain activities at certain times and when you are in certain places. If you watch TV, read or get online in your room, your brain automatically associates your BR with stimulating activities. Limit the 'awake' time you spend in your room. That will make it easier for your brain to turn itself off when it's time for you to sleep.
STOP CONSUMING. Try not to eat or drink anything about 2-3 hours before bed. Digesting and moving waste through your body is more efficiently done when you are awake. If you eat or drink (especially alcohol!) shortly before bed, it could interrupt your sleep pattern.
IF YOU DON'T SUCCEED, DON'T LAY THERE. If you turn in and find that you cannot go to sleep, don't just lay there to toss and turn restlessly. Give yourself about a half hour to wind down and fall asleep. If you are unsuccessful, get out of bed and try to tire yourself. It could be something as little as reading a few magazine articles or checking your email. The important thing is to get out of there. The more you lay there and become frustrated, the harder it is for you to sleep.
MANIPULATE YOUR ENVIORNMENT. If you sleep better in pitch black, get some room-darkening shades or invest in a sleep mask. If you like your room really hot or really cold, makes some temperature adjustments. Some folks don't realize it, but each person has an "ulitmate" sleep enviornment. It's where you feel the most comfortable. Create yours and you'll be sleeping in no time!
RELAX. Light exercise is sometimes helpful before bed. You might want to try Yoga or Pilates...both concentrate heavily on breathing techniques that are slow and controlled. The stretching and breathing combined is helpful with stress relife and relaxation - both of which are essential for a good night's sleep.
I hope that helps!

If I cant get to sleep, I just stay in bed with my eyes closed, no matter how long it takes, because eventually your gonna fall asleep and atleast a couple hours of sleep is better than getting no sleep at all doing something else, and the next day you might be tired but then atleast you should be able to get more sleep that next night because of it.

I soak in a hot bathtub with the lights off or just a candle burning. If you have bubbles or some bath gel use it in the tub or rub some on your hands and neck for aroma. If you have any lavender oil in the house this works too. You can also drink milk, You do need to shut off the computer as that is too much stimulation for the brain.

have a cup of warm milk, or if that doesn't sound appetizing try laying down and listening to some soft music. You definitely are not going to get to sleep, waiting for answers.Don't worry about not getting sleep and just lay down and relax. If it is just 1 nite that you can't sleep and it isn't a chronic problem, just relax,, it isn't going to hurt you to be up all nite. You might not be up to par during the day, but you can look forward to a good nite sleep tomorrow nite. Hey, sweet dreams.
