It is a form of anaerobic respiration. We form lactic acid when we do it, they make ethanol. I suppose it makes us more "advanced".
Imagine, the harder you train, the more drunk you get. we wouldn't have problems with obesity then, would we? Mind you, the marathon could take a while.

Yeast and bacteria both carry out fermentation. We all think of yeast first (beer, of course!) but many bacteria also produce ethanol as a byproduct of anaerobic respiration (fermentation).

Why do you breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide?
The reason is the same, that is part of their natural respiration and they derive chemical energy from the transformation process.
