NO. They are not. Next time I think it's probably best if you ask AFI fans and those who know the real meaning of emo than just anyone. (Like these people).

AFI is and was NEVER emo. They've been making music for 15 years and have progressed over the years. Their sound evolves in each and every record.

Originally, they were a punk band (which is what I like them to be known for). Then they turned more hardcore, then much darker but still punk and now, more glam.

But most of the time, they're known as a "goth"-punk band. Ever since 1998 with the release of Black Sails, they've always had a dark theme into their songs, but the term "goth"-punk was finally cemented when they released Sing The Sorrow. Which was a blend of the two.

When it came out, it was very different to all the sh*t that was happening in the music scene. Sing The Sorrow was genre-bending, there was nothing else like it. From that point on, they've always been labelled a "goth"-punk band.

Also, emo DOES NOT stand for "emotional", it stands for "Emotive HARDCORE". It's a genre and a noun, not a damn adjective used to label yourself or others.

Emotive Hardcore was shortened to "emocore", which was further shortened to "emo".

Emo has got nothing to do with cutting. It's just a genre and that's it. It's a style of music that started back in the 80's and pretty much died in the 90's. You don't hear true emo music anymore.

If you want to hear true emo music, then go back to the DC bands that spawned the scene, like The Rites Of Spring, Embrace, One Last Wish, Fire Party and Beef Eater.

And yes, it is a sub-genre of punk. But it has become meaningless these days. Many people associate emo with cutting, weird crazy hair, depression and all that sh*t instead of the music. That is NOT what emo was originally about.

It's music. It's about bands playing this style. Most people that label others or themselves as "emo" probably don't even listen to real emo. All they know is the stereotypical image (which is wrong) and cutting(also Wrong).

Early AFI was punk, hardcore punk, "dark" hardcore punk, "goth" punk and now, more glam and anthemic but still retaining their hardcore roots with songs like Kill Caustic and Affliction.

You just have to listen to old-school AFI to now that they were hardcore-punk heroes back in the early 90's.

They look emo, but not all of there songs are (though some are)... like lots of bands, wow we can make money by following this stupid fad where cutting yourself is cool.
I hate emos... yes I hate emos... they have no idea what pain is, and if they did, they wouldnt so happily embrace it.

DEATH TO EMOS! (Yes I said that, Emos dont actually want to die, they just say they do for attention.)
