Are there any decent cordless chainsaws?

Question

We're looking to cut down a few small (3-6" diameter) trees.

Brand recommendation? Anyone have experience with the cordless chainsaws on the market?

I'm not looking for a gas chainsaw and I know what the best brands are so, please, lets stick to the question in hand. Thanks!

Redchic, I want a cordless chainsaw and am looking for anyone who has experience with them. Everyone who answers, suggests getting a gas chainsaw, which is not what I'm looking for. At this point, I may just use a bow saw. Thanks for all the answers.

Cutting down 8" trees is not gonna be easy with a cordless anything. While current battery technology (lithium ion) is pretty cool, it would take an enormous battery (not to mention motor size) to give enough endurance for a job like this. Thus the advantage of cordless is lost. There's a reason why serious chainsaws are gas powered. Even the electric ones are pretty weak for the task you're suggesting. While not answering your question, my suggestion would be to keep borrowing your neighbor's saw or perhaps get one of your own. Husqvarna and Stil are the gold standards in small chainsaws. A sharp chain makes a huge difference, too. I sincerely think you'd be dissapponted in the performance of a cordless, but who knows!

I'm a little confused.... you are looking for a cordless chainsaw, but then say that you're not looking for a gas saw??? Hmmm...well this is my experience with them. At work I use gas saws all the time and electric occasionally. Personally I prefer Stihls (to me they are easier to make adjustments to). But amongst most sawyers that I know and work with.... it's pretty much a toss up between Stihls and Husky's (husqvarna) and nothing else! Especially when it comes to reliability and endurance.

Anyhow, you shouldn't need a very high powered saw to do what you're talking about, so get a small one (I'm thinking none larger than a stihl 230) and save your back and pocket book! The 230 has done very well for us. Even though it is a smaller saw, it does quite a job and will last for many years if well taken care of.

For the small trees you are cutting, just use a cordless reciprocating saw. I have a Robbi, used with a big tooth saw blade I have cut down up to about 6" . Not great, but beats using a hand saw. Although a good quality bow saw works good if you are in good physical shape.

There are some wonderful handsaws on the market for under $10 that have the blade that folds in on itself and are about 2' long when extended,including the handle.

I cut down several trees in the 3"-4" range with less than 8-10 passes. They cut very easily and very quickly. This type of saw is excellent for the small job or infrequent sawing jobs.

Ive never seen a good cordless chainsaw, that isnt gas powered

They do make a cordless chainsaw but I cant think of the name of it. I think it might be a black-n-decker. I saw it at Ace Hardware but no I have never used one, I think it clamped around the tree for safety reasons.Sorry I cant remember anymore information on it.

If you've only got a few small trees just get a brush trimming saw from your garden supply.
To answer your question 'no there isn't a battery operated chain saw that's worth a poot'

gas powerd is the only way to go i use husky's and iv never seen a cordless chain saw
