I don't know why I waste my time with people like Joe Dude, but I'll have you know I cheered 23 years of my life and didn't do it for the reputation I did it because I love the adrenaline of the crowd at a football game, I love being on a team and having wonderful friends. Oh,and guess what, I still have a life. I am married to my best friend, have a beautiful 8 month old, have a Bachelor's degree, make great money, am a Christian, and I still have a 6 pack on my stomach from all my years of being an athlete. Now none of this makes me any better than anyone else, but I don't go around judging people and you shouldn't either. It's not nice.
Now for the actual question-if this is something you really want to do, you need to enroll in a gymnastics class at the least. You can also hire someone to help you with cheers, dances, and stunts, someone at the gymnastics gym would probably help you. Good luck!

First of all, the first answerer has no idea what it takes to be a cheerleader. Just wipe his comments right out of your head!
I too, was a high school and college cheerleader, and am currently a cheer coach. I majored in Business and Computer Science and carried a 3.7 GPA when I received my Bachelors Degrees. I am over 40 and have twin 9 year olds that are being raised in a Christian home where we teach compassion and kindness, not snobbery or bigotry. Enough said about that.
As a current cheer coach, I can tell you what we expect from our girls.
First and foremost we stress academics. Being a good cheerleader requires a great deal of practice, and this can sometimes hurt your grade point average. We always stress that you can't go on in life to make a living at cheerleading....you have to have an education to do that.
As for the actual requirements:
Knowledge of routines, cheers and chants: Know them backwards and forwards....well enough to begin them anywhere in the middle of the cheer. I have seen many good candidates dropped due to the inability to start a cheer at any point in the routine.
Tumbling/Gymnastics to include cartwheel, roundoff, and back hand spring. Girls who can do a tuck usually get extra points. If you don't have your back hand spring down, nail the cartwheel and roundoff...lots of spring!
Flexibility and Posture: Be able to do splits and heal stretch. In a Liberty or heal stretch position, hold your balance for 20 seconds.
Judges always look for personality and smiles. Be sure to let yours shine through on try out day!
Keep your movements sharp and in proper form! No sloppy arms, wrists etc. You can lose lots of points in this area. If you have never cheered, you might want to check out cheerleading.about.com for proper movement techniques. I would also suggest that you attend a couple of basketball or other sports events to see how the cheerleaders move. There were many times that i took a video camera with me to get them on video....then go home and practice the routine until I knew it. UUsing a video will allow you to stop and rewind when you need to.
Remember to be personable. Smile, show a little attitude, even wink at the judges during certain movements.
If you are able, demonstrate as many tumbling techniques as you have. Ditto for jumps. This is where you can out-shine the competition. If you do not have this ability, be super enthusiastic in high kicking and movements!
Above all, don't forget that the Judges are looking for the ability to work as a team, know the cheers and chants and get the crowd motivated.
Wear your hair in a pony tail, off of your face. Not too much make-up and no jewelry. Let them know that you are a serious contender, not there for a beauty contest.
Best of wishes to you!

well girl it is like anything you try out for. If you aren't good enough you need to practice more. get in shape befor the try out...practice practice practice. I am thinking though if youhave to ask this question you may be too lazy to be a cheerleader, gotta have a lot of self motivation to be a good one, and if you haven't taken the time to realize yourself what you need to do, well may mean you would rather someone tell you what to do than actually put the effort into thinking about it??/
well good luck either way.

Just practice ALOT. before grade 7 i never did cheerleading in my life, and my friends convinced me to try out and i made it!
You have to be really loud and perky and show enthusiasm and dont give up, make sure your trying your absoloute hardest, and wheneverthe coach looks at you do something impressive, thats what I did.
Good Luck :)

Don't waste your time. Cheerleaders are the most plastic people in the world - they're like hairdressers - all they care about is their hair and makeup and boobs and boys - very shallow and ditzy.
