Amanda is trying to suppliment the family income by selling subscriptions to a woman's magazine which features serialized romantic novels. in one of her conversations she references "gone With The Wind", claiming that the most recent novel featured in the mag will be the next GWTW. In part Williams is showing us Amanda's determination and drive. She overcomes her natural humiliation at having to be a saelsperson, despite the fact that she's rather good at it. She sacrifices yet one more part of her dignity for the sake of her children.
