how is it societies' fault? *raises eyebrows* are you saying that if mothers and fathers raise children badly, then they commit crimes the mother and father are responsible? No. unless people are forcibly under the influence of drugs, they are in control of themselves, and maybe are influenced by others, but still can determine their own choices.

Who made the decision that crime is society's fault in the first place? NO ONE! Criminals are just that, people who do not care about other's rights or personal property; many of whom as sociopaths with no moral compass. The victims are the victims of the crimes the criminals commit NOT the criminals who chose to break the rules and laws.

Criminals should be reformed not punished. Prison just alienates prisoners from society and thus reduces their empathy for other people. Someone without empathy will exploit others and break the law to do so.
Of we reformed criminals then they would not offend again and society would benefit.
Our system of justice is all about punishments and blame rather than improving society and reducing the causes of crime.

So a rapist is a victim?
Where does that leave the person who was raped?
It is not often a totally idiotic question is asked, usually I would defend anyone to ask any question however obscure or simple.
Sadly this question shows a lack of self respect and any thought for others who need defending from their abusers.
We form 'groups' ---- Society in order to protect the 'group' from outside threats( like viruses, not just other 'groups') so when one of those inside the group betrays that protection by harming another in their own 'group' punishment is a necessary action.
In this country we have become sophisticated and like to call ourselves 'civilised' and regard punishment as part of the process of rehabilitation as opposed to an end in itself.
I'll leave you to decide if that's a good thing.

Your premise is flawed. Most crime is not society's fault. All too often, people eagerly portray criminals as victims of society, their upbringing, an unfortunate circumstance, whatever. People need to learn that you are responsible for your actions.

SOCIETY is at fault for AGREEING to certain crimes which in turn doesnt make people feel guilty for doing wrong.
Society does NOT make criminals COMMIT CRIME.
ONE day maybe, just maybe, little "Johhny" who rapes and murders WILL be punished as he SHOULD be and not be given a holiday as such.
We MUST look after the weak and elderly, for one day that will be us.

Society does not 'punish' criminals. Society has a right to protect itself from those that have proven to be a menace to it, imprisonment is society's way of removing those that will harm it. It is not mean as punishment, rather as protection.

At the end of the day, it's the criminal's choice to commit crime... therefore should they not suffer the consequences... Crime happens due to a whole range of factors and I don't think it's as easy as that.

the consequence for crime is punishment. The person who commits the crime suffers the punishment.
Society suffers punishment for the criminals it 'created' by having to pay their room and board while they're in jail.
See, all's well in justice-ville

If you don't punish the buggers, how on earth will you convince them that they need to change their ways? It's not society's fault, once you are an adult or older child you need to take responsibility for your own actions, and stop blaming everyone else. No-one else forces you to become a drug dealer, rapist, mugger, burglar etc.
