The plow truck plowed all the snow by the mail box and it turned into icy snow, and it was too difficult for me to get through. They sent a notice that they will stop delivering mail untill I shovel the snow. Thankfully the sun melted some of it and I could shovel the rest.
What do you think of this situation? Can they do that? I understand that they are having a hard time also, but how hard is it to get their but out of the car an additional foot just to put the mail in.

Ok I feel their pain... but most of you missed the part that the snow turned into ice b/c of the snow plows.
The thing is that it wasn't that difficult for them to get through, it was more difficult to shovel the ice out.
Besides I'm not attacking the postal workers, I acknowledge that they have a difficult job with the snow. So just relax.
I never said I was against their rules.

Instead of shoveling all the snow, get a portable mailbox!
Mount a new mail box on a sturdy pole. Stick the pole in a 5 gallon bucket. Add cement and let it set. Roll the new mail box out to where the mailman can get at it. Keep it there until all the snow melts. When the old mailbox is accessible again, roll your portable mailbox back into the garage. Repeat next year.

It's my understanding and the law in the city where I live, that all homeowners are responsible for clearing a path for the mail person to deliver the mail. If you just rent, it's your landlord's responsibility. That old saw about "the mail must go through" takes exception to inaccessible mailboxes.

Yes, it is thier own "rules" not laws they work by, if there is any danger or problem getting to a box, they can not deliver till it is fixed.
Also if you are in a area that uses a contract delivery person, they use thier private car to deliver, these are not mail employees, but are private contractors, who have specific contracts. And getting out at each house, would add hours to thier days.

I just saw on the news that yes they can cease delivering mail. Don't be lazy and clear the area. If it snows get out there within an hour. Get off your ***.

Of course it is legal. If you refuse to provide a safe , accessible repository for them, they will hold the mail at the post office for you for a reasonable amount of time. You are NOT special.

Yes it is legal. Pick up the mail at the PO until you can get it cleared.

Yes, it is legal. I think they should do that. No need for postal rates to go up because of workers compensation claims.

Yes, they warned me once too, but I didn't care because all they ever deliver is bills and junk mail anyway.
