Whether they are gay, loners, somebody in their mid/late 30s single(never married) and childless etc, etc. I mean even if they mean nobody harm they still get ridiculed for being different in America!!! Why do we live in a society of lemmings that all life is a one size fits all?

Acually different people are accepted by almost everyone in America. Its just that the few are amplified by the media. My friend from mexico came visit me last year in Atlanta. He ask me almost the same thing you did. So I took him to my local Walmart and asked him to sit down with me for a half hour on a bench at the front of the store overlooking the entrance and checkouts. I told him to spot for me any signs of intolerance. During that time we saw just about every ethnic group you can name and he could only point out one questionable act of anger from a white male when a black lady backed up into him and he gave her a angry look. Then again he may have just been mad that she ran into him. Though we did see a lesbian couple help a elderly lady with some items she dropped. She was very thankfull for the help. Saw a japan couple argue over the price of a item. They took the experation date as the price. The check out clerk never once rose her voice and was very patient and exsplained it multi. times untill they understood. Sadly you can pass by thousands of good honest non racial people and not remember any of them but for the one racial jerk that is unhappy with life and has to make everyone elses the same way if possible. Have faith and look for the goodness of people and you will see it alot more often than the foulness you see on tv.

I agree with the first responder, and I think they make an excellent point about the ugly duckling not even being written here, yet still expressing the same sentiments. We actually are MORE sensitive in this country to being accepting of other people who are different (try living in Japan for a month if you think it's repressive here), but of course there is always room for improvement. Regardless, we are still the greatest country in the world, and I think that the person who asked this question has probably bought into too much of the garbage that the liberal media and Hollywood libs alike want to shove down your throat. The second responder has too, for that matter.

Ironically, you guys are not thinking as individuals, but rather spouting off rhetoric that you heard somewhere else. But yeah, like I said, the US is not perfect, and we should still strive to accept everybody for who they are. We're making progress though, with gay marriage being legalized in many states (such as NJ most recently), and an overall belief that not accepting people is "uncool", which is part of what has influenced the change in policies, since of course those are based on people's voting habbits. Don't lose faith in your country, please, for things are improving, and like I said, we're still doing better than most of the world, whether you believe it or not. Our country needs people like you that care about acceptance though for the progress to continue.

This happens everywhere and it is in human nature. What do you think that the Ugly Duckling Children's story was all about? And it was written by Hans Christian Andersen in Denmark in the 19th century.
BTW, ever heard of the cast system in India?
I was born and raised in Europe they used to really ridicule single women over there in the recent past. They still do to so extent but since most people just live together nowadays it has somewhat diminished.

It is likely that you mean in the United States. This seldom if ever happens elsewhere in America. You are applying United Statesian culture to the rest of the world, that is a BIG mistake. United Statesian culture is unique in that it is self-involved and although it screams individuality any that attempts to not conform with the norm gets ridiculed into submission.

It all has to do with fear. Human nature is to fear something different. I also blame political correctness at the same time though. You never know what it is you can say or cant say anymore so that adds to the fear and makes it all worse.

because human beings have an in-group and out-of-group mentality; thats basic human nature and it takes alot of socialization to overcome that and not everyone is socializable.

Conformity is highly valued in this country. True diversity is seen as dangerous.
