Polo was the son an Italian merchant. He accompanied his uncle and father on an expedition they were undertaking to China. This expedition lasted approximately 20 years. Marco Polo is known as the first European who ever traveled the entire length of Asia.

When Marco Polo returned from his vast journey, he wrote a book. His intricate detail in describing the marvels of the East spurred many Europeans interest in Asia. However, many of his day looked upon him as a liar and didn’t take his writings for truth.

In fact, there have been many throughout history who have discounted Marco Polo’s writings as fiction. Many of these individuals have gone to great lengths to say that his writings are merely fairytales. These individuals could not understand why Polo never discussed foot binding, the Great Wall, or other more common aspects of the Far East. Many also discounted Marco Polo because he didn’t ever acquire the Chinese language.

Whether his writings are truth or fiction, they have captured readers for hundreds of years. To date, there are upwards of 80 different versions of his manuscript in different languages. Marco Polo’s writings have influenced many and they are the subject of much research. Many of
Marco Polo’s statements were proven in the 18th and 19th centuries. Only now is Polo receiving the respect that his generation withheld from him.

Polo was an explorer. He didn't invent that game Marco Polo, although I'm sure he'd be happy to know his name has been turned into a children's pool game.
