I don't know much about medication, but I've been having a lot of trouble sleeping lately. A friend of mine has been taking valium and says it's worked wonders for her. I was wondering how I can convince my psychiatrist who prescribes all of my medications that I would like to take valium. I'm also a former drug addict, so I've heard that kids snort these. I'm not sure if she'll think that I'm going to snort these or not...

If you're a former drug addict I'm not sure why you'd want to take that risk since it's very addictive. I don't believe you'll start snorting it but the chance that you'll become dependent is high. Of course Valium (Diazepam) works well. I was taking Lorazepam (another benzodiazepine) and I became addicted within a few weeks. I was taking it for my anxiety/panic attacks and I was only supposed to take 2 a day. It was also supposed to help with my problems sleeping. It worked really well but I began to need 4 or 5 or else I would freak out and have a panic attack when it wore off. I got switched to Klonopin but my problem is more anxiety related. There are other sleeping aids available that you should try before you get involved with taking anti-anxiety/anticonvulsant sedatives. There's no way to convince your psychiatrist that you need this drug unless she believes it's best for you. It doesn't hurt to ask but it's NOT a good idea if you are/were an addict.

No! Valium is an extremely addictive medication. I took it in the past, and when I had to go off, it took me a FULL TWO WEEKS for the "pulling feeling" to stop in my arms, and I felt a wreck otherwise. There are other pills. Your doctor may prescribe one for you.

Valium is a anti-anxiety med. If you are anxious then it would help but why not try something like over the counte Benadrly aka diphenhydramine or Melatonin or valarian root first.

Valium is strong and addictive. Your kidneys work overtime to process it through your body. Try these links--
