You are not going about this right. Instead of choosing how many fish you want, you should start looking at fish you like and learning about them.

As a typical small tropical community tank, you can fit a school of 6 neon tetra's, a school of 4 cory cats, and one dwarf gourami. That's three of the thousands of species available.

If you want goldfish, you can only keep one.

Start with 1 snail. It will multiply from there.

Depends if it is cold water or tropical tank. Since a 10 gallon is too small for typical cold water fish like goldfish which need at least a 29 gallon tank for a single small goldfish, I am going to assume you want a tropical tank. You can put around ten 1" fish in there, less if they are bigger it depends on size. A good rule of thumb is 1" per gallon, but I wouldn't include ghost shrimp in this if it is a 10 gallon tank. About the snails, DONT get them! Even with just 1 snail you can end up with hundreds, literally. For algae eaters, I would recommend otocinclus or otto's, they grow to 1.5" , not chinese algae eaters, they grow to be too big for a 10 gallon, I have one and it fits in a 29 gallon fine though. I would get to ottos, and 3 ghost shrimp, plus 7-8" of midwater and top water fish. (Count the inches for the full grown fish, not juvenilles)
Good Luck!!!!!!

first you need to decide what type of fish you'd like, and how much variety you'd like.

as for snails, deppends on if you care about the snails reproducing. I'd suggest 1 mystery snail. mystery snails can not reproduce on their own so they won't overrun your tank. they come in ivory, gold, black, and blue at most pet stores. a snail will be fien wi any of the suggestions I have bellow.

if you'd like a bunch of different looking fish I would honestly get 6 female bettas, you can get them each in a different color and have a few fin varieties. most other fish iwll need a few of their kind and so a 10gallon is too small for much variety.

however, if variety isn't toobig of a deal for you here are a few suggestions:
2 moons/platies
3 mollies (1 male 2 female if possible)
and a male betta

or

4 tetras
3 corydoras

or

4 tetra
1 male betta

3 corydoras
2 or 3 moons/platies or mollies
1 male betta

be sure to provide the fish with plenty of hiding spots and plants, and if you do get a male betta make sure you have silk or live plants, not plastic.

here are a few sites that you can pick and choose fish from a list of compatible fish and learn aobut them:

you have a small tank which means that the most fish that I would put in their is like 8 fish or 6 fish a two snails. small tanks can't handle a large bio load so be careful when you stock your tank.

its supposed to be one fish per every 3 gallons, if you want to add more fish put a larger filter on, id suggest a MarineLand BioWheel Filter for a 20 Gallon tank. and snalls?! if i were you i wouldnt even bother with. They reproduce like you wouldnt believe and your going to wind up with a million of em. If you want to keep a clean tank in the long run add a plecko or a cat fish.

10 inches of fish(an inch of fish per gallon) It doesn't really matter how many snails you start with, they always end up multiplying way too fast!

goldfish or tropical? it makes a huge difference. If goldfish, two of each. If tropical you can put about 5 fish and 3 snails. ( you could put more, but it would look bad )

depends on the fish you put in there
if you put in small tetras or guppies i would put in 7 plus 3 corys or upsidedown catfish depending on ph
alage eaters are good if you get the right species chinese alage eaters found at cheap places (wal-mart) do not work well because they get big and dont really eat alot of alage
get 5 pond snails or 5 malayian trumbet snails depending on ph

depending on their size and character, 3-6 fish. I caution you against putting snails in. They multiply faster than rabbits!
Get an algae eater instead.

if you have it set up with a aerator ,filter and live plants you can get away with four or five small to medium live bearers. don't crowd your luck.
