Maybe it's just the county I live in, but people don't seem to have much communication with the people on their street.
I only ask this because I have recently read the book
"This Book Will Save Your Life" by AM Holmes and it has made me realise how isolated our lives can be.

It's refreshing to read a question from a person, who obviously cares about his 'fellow man'
Yes, and especially in the UK, we can be very insular and reserved, but deep down most of us wish to communicate and exchange ideas with or neighbours. No matter what age, religion or nationality, we are all able to 'get on' if we work at it!
Perhaps by greeting your neighbours in the morning and evening with a smile, and getting into amicable conversation will be a good start. Offering to go to the shops for an elderly person will bring great relief for them, and perhaps satisfaction to yourself.
Now with PC power we can communicate through e mail, which a surprising number of lonely people use. Good Luck!

Why would people benefit from talking to people on the street? In the past you had to interact with people in the local community to live. But now with the efficiencies of the national and global economies it is no longer so important.

There is an expression "nothing unites like a common enemy". At the moment there is no enemy, so nobody is united. If you can get a common enemy then people will talk.
For example pull the plug on the electricity to your street - people will come out of their houses and talk to each other initially to talk about the power outage. Then conversation will go on to other things.

We moved to Spain just over 3 years ago and our next door neighbour is Spanish. Although I don't speak Spanish (I'm learning), we still manage to have a sort of conversation. I often find oranges, melons and tomatoes on our doorstep from his garden. He even took me to the local Guardia Civil when we were burgled and gave us some really good tips on security for our villa.

I speak and know my neighours. We hang out all the time. Of course, there are some of the neighbors that we don't speak to at all, but that is because they seculde themselves away. The only way to communicate with them is to try.

Yes I speak to most of our neighbours. More in summer then winter because in winter everybody jumps from their car straight in doors.Generally everybody is pretty friendly and I guess I am lucky.

We know and like all our neighbours (one set have fallen out with us recently but that's their problem). We all work so we don't see each other often, life is so busy. People are insular today.

My neighbors are very loving. Out here there are alot of fruits/vegetables that grow on the trees and when I moved here my neighbors hand picked the ripe ones and gave it to me in a basket. It was beautiful. They gave me ackee, apples, coconut, bananas, breadfruit, plantains, lime, mango, oranges, peaches, and jack fruit. I love them. We speak daily.
