Haynes Manual
What you do is get the Haynes Repair Manual for your Year and model of vehicle at Auto Zone, or another automotive repair shop. The manual will show you what and how to do the repairs.

Might have a cotter key out of the linkage. Look underneath the truck on the drivers side. See if the steel rod linkage to the tranny is loose. You can at least do a visual.

Not shifting is that the linkage underneath is not connected to the tranny. The pin to keep the rod from not slipping came out and then the rod slipped out.
