It can be good or bad...but on balance, I think football teaches us some very important lessons for life. For example, playing by rules, getting up when you're down, working hard for something, the notion of competition, etc.

An obsession of ANYTHING is bad. If it takes over your life and that's all you want to do, talk about, read about, watch...it's a SICKNESS. I worked with a guy who asked me if I was queer because I didn't like watching football games on TV. However, I enjoy going to my wife's and sons' Alma mater here in town to watch the home football games, and baseball games. Soccer, hockey, basketball really don't interest me.
I work with a lady who is obsessed with NASCAR (she wears NASCAR shirts, a jacket, has a NASCAR calendar, mouse pad, screen savers...she even had a #3 flag in her yard and flew it at half mast when HE was killed. She and her family and other NASCAR nut friends held a WAKE at her home after HE died!) I rile her up for the fun of it by saying PEOPLE GO TO HOCKEY GAME TO WATCH THE FIGHTS AND CAR RACES TO WATCH THE WRECKS.

historically sports have been a great thing for men in society. they have created group solidarity and a venue for emotional expression of men. all of this, of course, came at the expense to women who have historically been kept out of participation in sports -- particularly football today. with the increase in women's sports participation overall, however, the more pertinent problem with the football obsession in the US is the increase in steroid abuse and overweight young men playing high school and college football.

I think it is a bad thing. It promotes lazy couch potatoes. These people need to go actually do something with their lives, instead of living vicariously through football players.
