I saw all the answers and I see a lot of people who are not goal scorers. Zidane was never a goal scorer. Yeah he scored but not a prolific goal scorer. Beckebauer was a defender for God's sake. I will give 10 players who are the among the best ever in scoring, and I will tell you why:
1. Pele (Scored more than 1,000 goals in his career)
2. Romario (Very close to scoring 1,000 goals for his career)
3. Ronaldo (The top scorer in World cup history with 15, and he might add to that if he goes to World Cup 2010)
4. Alfredo DiStefano (5 times European Cup Champion with Real Madrid)
5. Marco VanBasten (3 time winner of the European Cup with Milan. Scored some fantastic goals)
6. Diego Armando Maradona (Scored goals in Argentina, Spain, Italy, World CUp, World Youth Cup, and many other tournaments. Simply the best.
7. Just Fontaine (Scored 13 goals in single World Cup. Still a record)
8. Gerd Muller (2 World Cups, 14 goals. Ronaldo has played in 3)
9. Hugo Sanchez (5 times top scorer in Spain's La Liga Championship)
10. Johan Cryuff (SImply put: He could scorer any type of goal against anybody)
I challenge anyone to come up with a list like this one. Let me see. ronaldinho, he is good, but what has he done in the World Cup level. The same goes for Gerrard, Lampard, Drogba, Henry, Best, Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, and everyone of the good scorers we have right now. Until they prove their worth, they won't make the list of the TOP 10 SCORERS OF ALL TIME..

I'll go for this lot. The difficulty is in trying to judge how much football as a whole has improved. For example I believe somebody like Henry is better than George Best was, but at the time Best was much further ahead of the players around him.
