The presence of nuclear weapons in the world provides economic stimulus because it prompts countries to expand their research, development, intelligence, and defense programs to compensate for the perceived threat.

These many programs create jobs and infuse the economic system worldwide with consumers who are more able to purchase. This creation of jobs is good for economic growth.

Nuclear weapons also create discord and disharmony and increase the likelihood of all war (even skirmishes not involving weapons of mass destruction). Wars large and small fuel the economy as well.

The U.S. president just asked for a 93 billion dollar defense increase. This money will flow into the world economy in the form of military purchases from civilian companies around the world, paychecks for activated Guard and Reserve members, and a myriad of other things.

Despite these benefits to the economy of the world, weapons of mass destruction have a devastating impact on the stability and happiness of people everywhere. They create fear, loathing, accusations, etc. Perhaps the economic COSTS would be an equally worthwhile question to consider; there are many and they are expensive.

Yes.

I think about the "opportunity costs" - do you know that piece of economics jargon? We use resources to build and stockpile.... hopefully never to drop.... atomic bombs. If we didn't we'd use them for something else. That's the lost opportunity, the opportunity cost of "wasting" (my opinion, my judgment) them on bombs. All those scientists and the taxpayers' money could be helping to eradicate poverty and disease from our world, to explore the solar system, to solve the problem of traffic congestion in our cities and on our major roads, or to invent and develop new technologies that make life more comfortable and fun.
