Good question. You have to decide if you like the custom look or the classic cruiser look. I choose to go with the V-Star 1100A Classic. I liked the look a little better. But Honda probably has a better reputation for dealer service and dependability. That's why if you compare simularly outfitted bikes, the honda will be a couple of hundred dollars more expensive. The VTX 1300R is real looker straight off the showroom floor but if you are into long slow 2-up riding in the mountains, I think that the V-Star 1300A Silverado would be tough to beat for the money.

Both bikes are great. I own a v-star 1100 for 3 yrs now and I LOVE IT. If you want a Honda buy a VTX (choose the motor size 1400 - 2200) But if you're trying to decide whether to buy a v-star or shadow, I would choose the v-star.

P.S. Only Yamaha design is the closest with a Harley when it comes to sound.

Always give year, make, engine size and model # when asking questions. We need all of that info to give an informed answer.
V-Stars & Shadows are made with 650 700 1100 etc. size engines and the year will make a difference as to the comfort/quality/reliability.
Anyway...go with a Honda. Yamaha's cruiser line-up had a lot of recalls.

Went from a Honda Rebel to a Honda VLX600 and now I'm riding a 2002 Honda 750 Shadow Ace. I prefer Hondas.

Both good bikes, If I was in the market, I'd go with the Honda VTX 1800.
V-Sar or Shadow only? I'd prefer the V-Star.

VStars seem a little under powered for their size, to me. They require frequent valve adjustment and its not easy to change the oil filter.
Maintenance costs may be a factor for you to consider.
