Pete Rose was a heck of a hitter, but then so where Ty Cobb, Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, and Barry Bonds. What about their Pitching records? Any of them have over 50wins? 25wins? No? Does any player have over 500 homers and over 90 wins as a pitcher BABE RUTH!! Until there is another Power Hitter who can pitch for close to 100 victories the greatest ballplayer will be Babe Ruth.

20 years huh. Well Pete Rose was the hardest working player of his generation, he played hard, was relatively injury free and did the most with his ability, but he was not even the best player of the 60s 70s or 80s, there were a couple of years where he might have been the best player at his position, 3rd base or right field depending on the year, but in his generation Rod Carew, Joe Morgan, George Brett, Mike Schmidt, Reggie Jackson and others rank ahead of him. He would not even be on the top 100 best players ever if you include pitchers.
The best has to be Babe Ruth, he basically changed the game from a game of hit and run and bunts to one of power. He took the game in a whole new direction on beer, hot dogs, and chasing women, he might have been involved in some off field frolicking with the ladies and binge drinking and eating but he never was even mentioned in anything that was related to gambling on base ball like Mr. Rose and the steroids were not even an issue, yes Ruth was not the greatest husband or father but neither was Mr. Rose. Ted Williams who lost close to five peak years to serving his country in two different wars is a close second.

In my lifetime, Hank Aaron, Pete Rose and Johnny Bench were among the best, but from the past, one could go with someone like Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Roberto Clemente, Brooks Robinson or maybe Ted Williams...
I'll say Joe Dimaggio...

Pete Rose isn't close to the greatest player of all time. Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ty Cobb, and Barry Bonds all have an argument, but personally I'd go with either Ruth or Mays.

Pete Rose is nowhere near the greatest player ever. Babe Ruth is the best, he put up ridiculous totals and also managed to be a pretty accomplished pitcher in his early career (he is ranked 15th on lowest career ERA). His career SLG% is 56 points higher than the next guy, Ted Williams.

I'd say Pete Rose is best player of all time in history of MLB in 2 categories, 1 is he's best player ever to gamble on baseball, and best ever to never be inducted into the Hall of Fame, and I hope soon he gets inducted into a new hall, which is Hall of Shame, but best of all time would be Willie Mays

it kinda depends on what your looking for, i would say ty cobb he has 4,189 hits, 724 doubles, 295 triples, 366 batting average, only 357 recorded strike outs, 892 stolen bases, 433 on base percent, 1,937 rbi's, and 2,246 runs. he also won the triple crown in 1909 and he is 2nd in hits all time, he stold home the most times with 54, he has won the most ever batting titles with 11 and he has the highest career batting average with a 366. there are so many stats you can look at but also he was a hard nosed agressive baseball player and players like that are rare.

with all respect, i think most people recognize only a partial
achievement of a player when they want to say they are the
"greatest of all time". some think of there home runs only. some think of their average. but only a few think of the combination
of the multiple threat. that is hitting, defense, throwing and base running. if you can assign a positive factor to all of those things[or negative for the lack thereof] then you must remove, for instance Barry bonds for his lack of defensive skills. just an example. .
he's at the forefront. not having exacted the figures i would guess if you put the top 50 offensive players on a list and picked the one with the best multiple overall skills it would have been.....
............................................ Willie Mays

Although its a little hard to believe its gotta be the Bambino. If you look at his stats he hit over 170 RBIs, once he hit 60 HRs one year, he hit around .370 one year and was also an awesome pitcher. Even though Rose has the hit record and Cobb is behind him the Babe might always be the best.
