For instance, if I didn't know the answer and left it blank, does that mean that I'm not taken away 1/4 of a point?

You are correct Krissy. It is true that if you leave a question blank on the SAT you won't be deducted 1/4 of a point-- Trust me, I took the SAT two times, and I would know. The only way you can lose points on the SAT is if you get an answer wrong, in which case you'll be deducted 1/4 of a point for each wrong answer.

So while you won't lose any points if you leave a question blank, on the other hand, you won't GAIN any points either. So in that aspect, it's almost as if you're losing points, because you're giving up an opportunity to gain points for each question you leave blank.

About leaving answers blank, the best advice I can give you is this: If you don't know how to solve the problem, but you can eliminate at least ONE answer choice in the question, just guess. Because if you get it wrong, you'll only lose 1/4 of a point, but if you get it right, you gain an entire 1.0 point. But if you don't have any idea how to do the problem and can't eliminate any of the answer choices as wrong, then you're best off skipping it and leaving it blank.

It is an effective test-taking strategy that if you can eliminate one or two from the four answer choices, it's best to guess. Good luck on your SATs!

I think that you won't get 1/4 point deducted for an unanswered question (like you do for an *incorrectly* answered question), but you obviously won't get the 1 point credit for that question either! So in a sense, it is 'held against you'.

"ETS gives you 1 point for a correct answer, 0 for a blank, and deducts 1/4 point for wrong answers (1/3 point for Quant Comp problems, but they only have four choices."

For every correct answer, you receive one point towards your raw score.
For every wrong answer, 1/4 of a point is taken away.
For every answer left blank, you receive no credit but no points are taken away either.

trust me ive taken this test. if you leave an answer blank, you will not get credit for answering, so your percentage chance goes down. if you answer and get it wrong, it counts as 1/4 point against you.

No if you omitt a question it counts against you (no points awarded) if you get an answer wrong you get like 1/4 of a point or something deducted.

Yes. No points are subtracted for a blank answer. It's stil, "Held against you", because you don't get any points, but none are subtracted either.

If you answer a question incorrectly, .25 of a point more than an unanswered question will, be deducted.

No. An unanswered question is automatically a negative point or fraction thereof.
You're better off guessing than leaving an answer blank.
